I met my best friend Deborah when we were entering the 5th grade. Another friend told me that this Deborah girl wanted all the 5th grade girls to wear white bobby socks with black loafers.
The black loafers had to have new copper pennies for that year and we better not have ashy legs. I was overjoyed at the prospect of belonging to this clique. Begging my mom for the required apparel was no problem and on the first day I was ready to meet this fashion icon.
Well she did not disappoint, she had energy, was fun-loving and after a brief inspection I passed the test. Although I met her that day it was not until high school that we meshed as "Best friends".
I will not take you down the memory lane of the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90' and the new millennium.
Over the years the friendship has ebb and flowed but always the tie remained strong. She married and moved away, I divorced and stayed here. So when her mom had a knee replaced I was delighted to find out she was coming home.
We had some much fun and it was just like we never had parted. Shopping, sharing, laughing, and listening as though we were walking home from the football game.
The time spent with her was very sweet, and I became aware of just what a best friend is.
A best friend is forever, no matter what.
